Aggravated assault is one of the most serious violent crimes in South Dakota, with 2,081 incidents reported in 2023. This offense involves an intentional attack on another person with the intent to cause severe injury, often using a weapon. Law enforcement treats these incidents with the utmost seriousness due to the potential for significant harm.

Property crimes

Burglary saw 1,823 incidents reported in 2023. This crime involves unlawfully entering a building, typically with the intent to commit theft. Burglaries can lead to considerable property loss and contribute to concerns about safety in homes and businesses.

Larceny/theft

There were 10,725 incidents of larceny/theft in the state in 2023. This broad category includes a variety of thefts, from shoplifting to stealing personal property. These crimes are frequent in both urban and rural areas, and they represent a significant portion of the state’s overall crime rate.

Motor vehicle theft and DUIs

Motor vehicle theft had 2,160 incidents. This crime involves the stealing of cars, trucks, or other vehicles. DUI offenses involve operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs, which poses significant risks to public safety.

Drug-related crimes

Drug/narcotic violations are also prevalent, with 6,315 incidents reported, including 4,291 related to drug equipment violations. These crimes involve the illegal possession, distribution, or manufacturing of controlled substances. According to the Department of Corrections, most non-violent offenses are drug crimes
