Common causes of motorcycle accidents

On Behalf of | Mar 3, 2020 | Firm News |

Motorcycle accidents are common on the U.S roads. According to the NHTSA, more than 48,000 people lost their lives between 2007 and 2016 as a result of motorcycle accidents.

Unfortunately, these figures may rise in the coming years if proper safety measures are not duly followed by everyone on their bikes. Here is a list of some of the common causes of motorcycle accidents on U.S roads. Staying aware of these dangers can help you ride more safely.

Speeding

According to NHTSA, nearly a quarter of motorcycle accidents arise from speeding. This is also one of the major causes of injuries and disabilities among motorcyclists

Unsafe lane changes

Motorcyclists should learn how to safely change lanes while riding their bikes. Unsafe lane changes can risk collision with other road users. Riders need to check their blind spots and practice safe driving at all times.

Lane splitting

In most states, it is illegal to drive between two lanes. While this can help avoid traffic jams, getting too close to other cars may reduce a rider’s response time once other vehicles start to move. As a result, the motorcycle may get sandwiched between vehicles.

Left-hand turns

Left-hand turn accidents occur when a car fails to indicate that it is making a left-hand turn, or when the motorcyclist attempts to overtake a car that is waiting to make a left-hand turn.

Unsafe road conditions

The presence of potholes, debris, crumbling pavements and lack of the necessary safety signals may increase the chances of motorcyclists losing control as they try to negotiate their way or avoiding hitting objects on the road.

Distractions and driving while intoxicated

Driving while under the influence of alcohol is also a leading cause of motorcycle accidents. Intoxication hinders the rider’s ability to make sound judgment, especially when speeding. Driving under the influence may cause head-on collisions or rear-end accidents, or the driver may hit stationary objects on the road.
