About Founding Attorney Matt Kinney
Attorney Matt Kinney’s trial experience began in 1995 and blossomed through his own firm in Spearfish, South Dakota, in 1996. Matt focuses his attention on all forms of criminal law. He was employed in the insurance industry prior to entering law school at the University of South Dakota, and he has gained a unique perspective in how to work with these companies to the benefit of his clients.
Matt has received his AV Preeminent rating* by Martindale-Hubbell as a lawyer practicing with the highest ethical standards and professional ability. Legal ability ratings are established from peer and client reviews based on performance in key areas such as legal knowledge, analytical capabilities, judgment, communication ability and legal experience.
Matt is licensed to practice law in the state of South Dakota and the United States District Court. His appellate case history includes various criminal and civil cases before the South Dakota Supreme Court. Many of these cases broke new ground in interpreting the areas of Fourth Amendment matters and real estate buyer’s rights. He is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers as well as the South Dakota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers organizations.
Matt generally practices in front of more than 20 circuit court judges, eight Magistrate Court judges and federal judges in Rapid City, Deadwood, Sturgis, Belle Fourche and other communities on a daily basis. His clients have benefited from Matt’s earned respect working against state, county and federal prosecutors to attain the best result for every client. Matt is also known statewide for his extensive appellate court accomplishments in the development of search and seizure law involving drug traffic stops and warrantless seizures. His work is recognized beyond the borders of South Dakota for high-profile criminal cases that have been resolved successfully. Matt is also an active participant in South Dakota State Bar matters, and serves as a mentor to various young attorneys.
Matt has a strong working knowledge of what can be expected for clients in all criminal cases, especially those accused of DUI, drug trafficking and possession, and various crimes against people, from murder to simple assault, and from grand theft to vandalism. Matt’s practice prides itself not only on satisfied results but the quality of the professional relationship and experience the clients enjoy during a difficult process and time in their lives.
Matt also serves on boards involving the management of public services and private property. His passions include hard work, bicycling and motorcycles, music, viticulture, baseball and swimming in the Pacific Ocean.
About Kim Kinney
Kim specializes in both family law and criminal law. Her strong advocacy and listening skills lend her to “read the room” as effective as any attorney or business person. Pete Skvicalo, born and raised in the Black Hills, is a South Dakota–licensed attorney with courtroom experience as a Deputy State’s Attorney in Pennington County. He combines prosecutorial insight into case building and litigation with over fifteen years of business and management leadership in Spearfish. Pete’s practical, no-nonsense approach and clear communication help clients through high-pressure situations. He holds a Juris Doctor from Mitchell Hamline School of Law and a B.S. in Business Administration from Black Hills State University. Actively involved in the Spearfish community, he enjoys outdoor activities.
